Message from Chairman CII National Environmental Committee & Past Chairman IBBI

Business can no longer ignore impact or dependence on biodiversity and corporate leaders are increasingly joining the conversation around nature and conservation. On the eve of International Biological Diversity Day on 22 May 2017, I would like to urge industries to take collective action on conserving our precious habitats and also minimize biodiversity footprint in their operated areas as it is key to human survival in this world and continue the development path it has embarked upon. In my three years as Chairman of India Business and Biodiversity Initiative a flagship initiative of CII to help industries mainstream biodiversity in their business actions across value chain and operations, I have seen an encouraging response from the IBBI members. I do hope this positive trend will continue and business will make an even greater contribution in future for their own sustainability and growth.”

Mr. R. Mukundan, Chairman CII National Environment Committee & Past Chairman IBBI, Managing Director & CEO, Tata Chemicals Ltd.

Message from IBBI Chairman

Challenge for human race is to stop pressures of production and consumption on ocean acidification, the pollution of fresh water and atmospheric pollution in their tracks and to gradually reverse them. It’s all about treating the world’s natural capital like water, biodiversity, atmosphere and the ecosystem services they provide, as the scarce and valuable resources they are. Quantum leaps in sustainable management, eco-efficient use and restoration of all resources whether for food or fiber production, for manufacturing or tourism are needed. To make a real difference, we must bring together best business practices and the best framework policies, aligning bottom-up and top-down. As the new Chairman of India Business and Biodiversity Initiative hosted by CII on invitation from Ministry of Environment of Forest and Climate Change, I would like to continue the good work our past Chairman Mr R Mukundan has started and would like to call on other industries on the eve of International Biological Diversity Day, 22 May 2017, to start thinking on biodiversity as key element to become truly a sustainable business. Perhaps through initiatives like this, we might all be able to start sharing responsibility with government, business and public working together for sustainable use and conservation of our ecosystems.
